90. Meet You at the Obelisk, Then?

All this shaken material
- can’t you hear the crunch of angels’ footsteps
maybe just the tinklings of continuing dilapidation?

Hopeful & dirty
we’ll blunder out of this cave
somehow
& blink in astonishment
at this silver light

. . .  not real
but you are
& sometimes we

Justice should be noisy
- louder than the crash
of all our collapsing
institutions

Insieme la nostra speranza e la nostra maledizione: la positività vestigiale

Most of life here now:
a rapid montage of broken objects

“What we call the present is the point of emergence of each thing into everything, the terrain where the constant passage into relations, the coming of things to life, is occurring.”
Hejinian (2000), p 373

This town & this city
- built on moraines & riverine detritus
on splintered stone & muck
odd, errant pudding-stones here

Old Sawney’s Head this Hallowe’en
- glowing golden & toothless now

So it comes to a stop
but won’t the stop end?

89. Beware the Cave: An Opera

THE SCENE:
The cave is on a sea coast, facing West. It is within a grove of trees. A stairway descends the steep wooded slope – the trees look like maple & oak, fairly young & straight. At the base of the cliff is a rocky shelf, which leads at once onto a shingle beach, that continues under cliffs to a small, primitive classical temple and another wood, beneath rocky crags. The sea is glaucous and quite troubled.

What is strange is that the stairway extends beyond the wooded cliff, up above the clouds to where the sun is being laid to rest. This opens up the landscape into a scene of total allegory, a locus for extraordinary transformations and voyages. Whatever you want. However you want to read it.

The light is very muted & silvery, quite fishy, though with ruddy-to-pink shadowings & shadings. Any people, actual people, are dressed, though, in scarlet.

THE TWO GREEN BEARS:
It really is not good
for children to be here – oh you
are mistaken to be here – best
for little ones to go, to go, to go

THE FRIENDLY RED LION:
It is a fine day to be alive!
Let me help you with stories for
once you have told them you can die

THE LITTLE ELF:
Thrrllp snyy fwrr
Fwrr thrr thrr ghrh
Szhszh szhszh hnrr

THE BOY TO THE GIRL:
NOTICE

SAINT THOMAS, CALLED DIDYMUS:
I must believe or I shall die!
My only hope is Our Lady’s Girdle!
Upon its green string I shall hang myself
To prove its real existence & thus
Live for ever.

THE BOROUGH ORGANIST:
Grind on for ever
despite your cancer &
your cough! Grind
& blur. Your stone
will be your marker

THE POET:
Please, ma’am, I am a bachelor
but I do hope to study further poetics
& deep theory. I have
a portfolio of workshop poems
that I believe will enable me
to live for ever as a work of art
Fund me! Fund me!

THE HORSE OF ṢALĀḤAD-DĪN YŪSU IBN AYYŪB
[makes threatening noise of hatred
for thus he spurns the poet
poor unbelieving wretch]

THE JOLLY JUGGLER:
Turn it upside down & float!
Don’t hear a word they say but
concentrate on the deadness in their eyes!
Spring sideways! Leave it &
don’t believe their gift
– it is a Thulian Ice World Cosmogony
absolute accretion of dark matter
unacceptable to any life!

THE LITTLE FAIRY IN A RED DRESS:
How I love all this world of tutus & of muumuus!
How delicate & complex like the folds of our flesh
the prime plasmic reticulum that grounds our being
rich & diverse as a woodland or any city
always on the border between brute matter & information

constantly adjusting each moment a universe
how I love it! I love it!

OLD SAWNEY:

88. Adjustments to Be Made

Fig. 6 The Poet Wonders How

It is true that our origins lie with the bears, whose dance welcomes us to play outside this cave, where fixity erodes & dissipates. Hullo bears! The lions will tell us what a fine day it is, that useful animal the red lion, glad to help us with our stories, our unending stories. Hullo, red lion – top of the morning to you, sir! And then, you too, little elf fluttering so bravely & briefly, your dear little dance through space & time a perfect improvisation – oh, we salute you & your butterflies, little one. Notice then obtrudes: pus is seen & warned against – all that decay suddenly not part of life’s great cycle, Brother Rot Our Friend – but what is ruled against & banned. Goodbye, innocence. Hullo, gullibility. Here comes Thomas, welcoming fluid & unprovisional actuality’s replacement by sheer eternal dogma. The man with the organ can carry on grinding it for ever, now he knows his place – he is lost. Somehow, ignore him. And that little wandering poet, like all poets looking the wrong way & choosing non-existence – please! Hatless. Saladin’s horse’s hoof adjusts his head for him, reforms it nicely, but can’t maintain any more momentum. Back into the bone-pit.

Only the jolly tumbler knows enough to fade into the light itself, & drift warily out of Old Sawney’s reach. Let, too, the funny little red fairy bless him, as she kicks up to choose rebirth & idiocy amongst the bears again.

In sacrificing herself, knowingly & unknowingly, she restarts the process. There are adjustments to be made. They will be made on us.

86. Yes? Yes?

Refuse? Yes, they’ll shrivel and crush.
The perfect pie unshared is silt. What
must be lost is private rawness, coteries
of public abjection and mass profit for the few.
Resistance remained ever – Sawney Beanes need stabbing
fraud will need wounds, an opened book
and our shared public ritual. Humanity
history, origin – let them be unwritten.
Utter need is still to be full & true.

Yes? No, never immaculate: funny
untenable is this landscape. Toasters move out.
Ritual rottenness simple and given, not bitter
But interesting. People & power are different
sometimes married, often now wasted. Circumstances here
childish but silent, stone, stuck. Isn’t
this ineffective & reasonable again? Bloody! Bloody!
Overrun. This warning is trying and failing.
The duck’s back lives long. Get rid of it.
