10. A Sent (The Balancings)

Let’s use each word sweetly
Every instance that is acceptable we’d want to be so sweetly
The things that are acceptable we shall dedicate to female American language poets (in the broadest sense), who use that language sweetly
***
OK, then, let’s dedicate this venture to their writing, and the rain
The venture must dress to match the declining glory of the poets and the rain’s increasing rigour
Damson shall be the dress to match & mature into the declining glory of the poets and the rain’s increasing rigour
We can realise how the damson dress shall venture and joy within this turning silver & grey, unexceptional as the declining glory of the poets
***
Joy, in this case, we’ll find at the balancings
The rests in the midst of where we are, these are the balancings
Against what we have eaten, what we have thought – this rests within the balancings
We’ll hold our wits about us, no matter how it rests with what we have eaten, through the balancings
***
Ah, if only our wits were real
Our wits build up this whole world around us
Our wits build up this world, this one world, out of fear of all the others
Our wits build this fear into a world – it is empty – look! look!
***
So let’s be heroes we’d said once, empty but hopeful
Heroes are good at posturings and are ever hopeful
Our delight at the heroes’ posturings can make us ever hopeful too
A fine slice of damson pie, gives as much delight as the posturings of heroes and is more helpful too
The rich dark fruit juice of that pie – haemorrhagic but hopeful ever too
The language leaking out of this crust is haemorrhagic and staining yet hopeful too
What a mess! licking up the language leaking a process unending but ever hopeful to

9. Essential

Please hold sweetly onto consciousness
like, the “I’m” is now acceptable and nice
here, I’d dedicate this to you, Fanny

let’s crank it up in venture to high art
dress ourselves all proudly in pellicules & mantles
the colour of damson ketchup – ahh! breathe it in
in this new era such joy unexceptional

there will be balancings: this the one hear then
when the city pulls itself in & rests, oh
like someone who has eaten too much beef
you know, bad for the wits but not unpleasant

not like real diseases caught from Faber & Faber
see – let’s hew at the lot & then build
this page isn’t empty because of fever but fear
fear of what’s empty, deaf blind & aphasic

so let’s be heroes of some ridiculous sort
swinging through in our primrose clothes – oh posturing
a kind of delight to behold, sufficient
for this whole thing issuing out like pie juice
                                      haemorrhagic
                                      language leaking
                                      process unending

8. The Sound of You

“Consciousness has nothing to do with me either
I’m just moving inside it, catch as catch can’t”
Fanny Howe, Selected Poems (U Cal P, 2007, p 9)

High drips afford us all
Pellicules and kittens tend
Ketchup smells the clyster
Unexceptional in my opinion

The sheep’s nose swells the precipice
Writing hemp agrimony is madness
Beef – are we begging it to eat?
Unpleasant flesh presses us

Diseases front it formal facile or
Hew our shilling to initial an alliance
Ebola brilliant it ransoms form if
Deaf I aren’t definite the foe

Heroes ring our upper gnomes
Sweeping me in needled flesh
If space behold our prince in riding clothes
Issuing you assume it’s true

7. What You Are Then

for Ginie

I dreamt of all this food
piled in a kitchen, then
cut up small to glisten
unexpected

The sheens discrete & precise
writing in agreeable readiness
before we begin to act
in pleasure

This is frantic, formal, familiar
you are skilled in it & alive
ebullient & transformational
defiant

We have run out of pronouns
something is needed fresh & spicy
beyond all praise & ridicule
is you

6. A Recipe for Curry Pie

for Gui Benvenutto (and I’ll give you the cold noodle recipe separately later.)

Best beef mince c 700 g              oil
flaky pastry: 1 packet               little pack of tomato paste
1 or 2 onions                        3 medium potatoes
1 or 2 carrots                       whatever sort of seasoning you use
maybe even a stick of celery         a little milk
3-4 mushrooms
2 or 3 chillies (more or less!)
couple of tablespoons curry paste
                                - & what do you
                                  expect from this then?

Take a pie dish or flan dish, c 7 in
- no need to fight over this!
& lightly grease
so it doesn’t all end up lost again
then cut up the vegetables small
                                 - isn’t that a pleasant thing?
peel the potatoes & repeatedly dice
you can’t get too formal here

Heat up the oil in a big saucepan
that outsideness will not press in or too strong
& get your veggies sizzling well (onions first)
add the curry paste
                    - definitely as a heap of stones
& after a couple of minutes then the meat
& let it brown well enough, then on a lower heat
with potatoes & seasoning added, plus the tomato puree
moist like the wound that was talked about
maybe with a little boiling water added to ensure
and cook it gently for up to 30 minutes
next put your oven on 180°

Divide the pastry into two & roll out
(thus the ludicrous change to laudable, people)
for the top & bottom (slightly larger to go up the sides)
fit the bottom on & fill it
like this world is full of stones & things
you add the top, trying to get a seal around
& with a couple of slits in for the steam
- you can’t just accept this, you have to do it right
a little milk brushed across the top is nice
and it cooks in the middle of your oven for half an hour
- isn’t that what you are then?

[I got this recipe from my wife’s family, so you might call it Anglo‑Singaporean, I’d reckon. Good hot, very good warm, fine cold, with salads, cold noodles etc. And you can cook up a filling with vegetables indeed – aubergines! – for a nearly as delicious veggie version.]
